South Dakota Voices for Justice
South Dakota Voices for Justice (SDVFJ) envisions a South Dakota that is diverse, inclusive and anti-racist. SDVFJ's mission is to empower South Dakotans with accurate information about Islam, Muslims, immigrants and refugees to fight Islamophobia and anti-immigrant bigotry in order to nurture informed, inclusive and civically-engaged communities while supporting legislation and candidates within this mission.
Board Members At-Large
Description
SDVFJ Board of Directors is composed of at least five members and no more than 11 members. Remaining legal requirements of the Board of Directors are listed in the organizational bylaws.
SDVFJ Board of Directors is the governing body, overseeing vision, mission, and internal operations of the organization. SDVFJ Board members are elected for three-year terms. Board members hold overall fiscal and managerial oversight responsibility for SDVFJ. They are charged with the supervision and oversight of the SDVFJ mission. They are responsible for making decisions and assuring decisions are carried out in the manner intended. Ultimately, Board members serve as ambassadors for SDVFJ’s mission, inside and outside of organizational commitments.

Board Member Responsibilities
Fundraising
Board Members are expected to consider SDVFJ a top three philanthropic priority in their personal giving and are expected to make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that SDVFJ can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations and individuals, SDVFJ expects to have 100% of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity. Member dues can be considered as a Board member’s annual contribution. It is also an expectation that Board Members will assist with fundraisers developed by the Staff and/or will develop Board initiated fundraisers.
Qualifications for Service
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the South Dakota Voices for Justice mission and who has a track record for leadership and public service. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified Board Members.

10 Basic Board Roles and Responsibilities:
- Determine mission and purposes.
- Support and evaluate the Executive Director.
- Ensure effective planning, implementation and monitoring of organizational goals.
- Determine which programs are consistent with the organization’s mission and monitor their effectiveness.
- Ensure adequate financial resources.
- Protect assets, ensure financial controls are in place and provide financial oversight.
- Build, orient and maintain a diverse Board and Staff that reflects the communities SDVFJ serves.
- Ensure legal and ethical integrity.
- Enhance the organization’s public standing.
Board Member Responsibilities
- Be knowledgeable about and believe in the SDVFJ’s mission, vision, programs, and events.
- Must be a member in good standing with SDVFJ.
- Serve as a leading ambassador of SDVFJ’s mission, programs, and services.
- Agree to a three-year Board term with the option of renewal for one additional term.
- Regularly attend and prepare for Board meetings and important related meetings.
- Volunteer for and willingly accept assignments and complete them thoroughly and on time.
- Serve on at least one sub-committee, preferably as a chair, and attend committee meetings.
- Make a serious commitment to participate actively in Board and other SDVFJ work.
- Prepare and/or approve necessary organizational policies.
- Fund-raise and Friend-raise on behalf of the organization.
- Stay informed about Board matters, prepare for meetings, and review and comment on issues of importance.
- Participate in creation of strategic plan and conduct annual review of the strategic plan.
- Get to know and build collegial working relationships with other Board members, Staff and SDVFJ stakeholders.
- Respond to requests for feedback or decisions between meetings in a timely manner.
- Understand financial statements or commit to learning about nonprofit financial oversight.

- Past or current engagement with SDVFJ (e.g., volunteer, funder, referral, lobbyist, content provider, etc.)

- A commitment to and understanding of SDVFJ’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
